ABUNDANT LIFE IS ABOUT SIMPLE THINGS

This week, as I thought about my sermon for today and about the book review for today – Anne Lamott’s Help Thanks Wow, it occurred to me that I have been missing the old thought, KISS, “Keep it simple, s…….”

I stopped for a moment in my office and looked out the window at our garden here. Sunlight flickering through the ferns, the orchids that are luminous, and I realized how abundant my life is.

The resurrected Jesus doesn’t appear to the disciples in a chariot surrounded by golden clouds to the tune of herald trumpets, he meets them on the beach. They recognize him when he simply says, “Come have breakfast.”

Ms. Lamott also says, prayer can and should be simple. We don’t need to use King James language for it to be OK with God. Often just the word, “Help” is more than enough.

Following the notion of simplicity her second word, “Thanks” is always good. As I look out this office window at the beauty, I do just say “Thanks.”

The Rev’d John Booty, in his book Meditating on Four Quartets, the T. S. Eliot poems that say so much about our lives in the tradition and life of our mother church, the Church of England, talks about the reality that we – each of us – through the holy routine and seasons of the church are in touch with God whether we realize it or not. And out of that comes the gift of action on our part.

Booty also reflects on the eternal self-giving of Jesus, whether on the beach with the disciples, or on the cross.

All of this to say, take a moment or two this week and look at some flowers, or a sunset, or waves at the beach and realize how close our loving, forgiving God is to us in the reality of our lives, even cooking fish on the beach.
