On the way to church the other day I followed an SUV down 15th Avenue from Sunrise to Broward. I didn’t have enough time to count all the stickers on the back of that car. There were thirty-five when I stopped counting. No matter what the driver intended to communicate with each of these stickers, my response was that he or she might just be confused.

The story also told is about a woman who was driving and raging at the traffic around her. She honked her horn at some, raised a middle finger at others, and even rolled down her window to shout obscenities at some. She realized that there were flashing lights behind her and pulled over. A police officer, hand on sidearm, approached, had her get out of the car , handcuffed her and took her to jail. Later in the day she was released and the officer apologized by saying, “I was behind you and saw how you were behaving, and then saw the bumper sticker on your care saying Follow Me To Church – and thought that you had stolen the car!

As the hymn says, “They know we are Christians by our love.” And we live in a world where anger seems almost to be the rule. We are called to be the ones who do love and respect our neighbors – even on Oakland Park, Federal Highway, Broward and yes, even I-95!

As we come to the end of this Lenten Season, my prayer is that we have all taken a look at our behavior as followers of Jesus Christ. Each of us is to live our baptismal vows each and every day.

I know this takes intentionality and a certain amount of effort on our parts to live a life reflective of God’s call to us. I also know that results include the kind of feelings that go with knowing the relationship we have with our loving God.
