Pray for Me

Since I wear my collar most of the time, I find that people – outside the church – talk to me and they usually end our conversation by saying, “Pray for me.” I always respond, “I will, if you will pray for me.”

That comes out of a sense that all of us need all the prayer we can get. And I am always grateful for those prayers.

Several years ago I discovered a short prayer written by William Sloan Coffin. I have begun using it as the blessing at the end of services. A number of you have asked for copies. So here it is:

May God give you grace never to sell yourself short, grace to risk something big for something good,

and grace to remember that the world is now too dangerous for anything but truth and too small

for anything but love, and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with us this

day and remain with us forever. AMEN.

You can pray this prayer as it is written – for others – or you can substitute the word “me” for “you.”

Either way, I am sure that Fr. Coffin will not mind. And you can end the prayer after the word “love” with

AMEN if you choose.

Again, thank you for your prayers for me and certainly, in turn, I will continue to pray for All Saints

and for each of you.
