All Saints Episcopal Church
A House of Prayer

I seem to remember that churches used to be called "Houses of Prayer." The obvious reason I suppose is that people prayed, or at least, we thought that people were praying in churches.

We are intended to be in touch with God individually and with others. We are intended to worship God publicly and privately.

Our Book of Common Prayer, along with all the Books that preceded it, is intended both for corporate prayer and for personal devotional prayer. If you find it difficult to form the words of prayer, when you pray, the Book will come in handy.

The compilers of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer put it together in a certain order. As you look at the Book you will note that the orders of service begin with Morning and Evening Prayer. The intention is that we are to pray daily, as we live out our lives in God’s hands.

All Saints is a house of prayer. We pray together on Sunday. On Wednesday at 12:05 we come together to share prayers for healing. Which also means that in worship you and I are called to respect those around us - our approach to God will vary I am sure from the ways of worship others find sacred. A wonderful tradition here is the moments of quiet. So when you turn to someone with a smile of welcome, or the touch of a hand, that you are in the midst of this house of prayer.

All are welcome here. As we gather each Sunday and other times, share the silent beauty of All Saints with all who worship here.

And we pray before and at the end of meetings, asking God to be present with us – and thanking God for being present with us.

More than one person visiting our Church, has commented that it feels like prayer here, that there is a feeling that many conversations with God have happened here. I know that to be true.

All this is just one more thing that makes me grateful to be here. And I thank God for that.
