Me and Lent

As in “me first” or “gimme”, the pronoun (me) has gotten a bad name over the years. We are constantly told we should be thinking about others. It is giving to them is what we are supposed to do.

Now, taken all by itself – just me – there is almost something poignant about the word. Only two letters long. Barely one syllable. It does look like it could use all the help it could get, doesn’t it?

“Love your neighbor as yourself,” we are told. Now just maybe, before I can love my neighbor very well, I have to love me – not in the sense of any kind of blind passion but in the sense of looking after myself, of wishing myself well, of forgiving myself occasionally, of being my own friend.

All that isn’t easy is it. Knowing that God loves me even takes some learning.

Lent is a time for introspection not a time for beating oneself up. Lent is a time for each of us to reflect and pray about our relationship with God and with others, and it is also the time to know deep in our hearts that we, each of us, are really OK. Loved by God. Forgiven. Beloved.

So, during this Lenten Season, while you are thinking about forgiving others, forgive yourself. You are a child of God. Give yourself the gift of some time with God in the deep-seated knowing that you will never be perfect, and that God doesn’t expect you to.

And share this Lenten Sunday with loved ones near and far. Have a blessed Valentine Day.
