The Beatific and Befuddled Episcopal Church

In an article in a recent The Living Church, the Rev’d John Ruef from Virginia describes the Episcopal Church in this way, “apostolic and anarchic, beatific and befuddled, catholic and congregational.”

I not only agree, but I like the “beatific and befuddled” description. I have grown up an Episcopalian, and loved it for its diversity, it’s welcoming nature, and for the most part, it’s agreement to disagree.

Seems to me that while we differ on some things, there is something here that leads us all to trust in God. In the midst of Lent, as we describe ourselves as honestly as we can ,as sinners, all of us are in need of God’s forgiveness and mercy.

I like who we are. And I particularly am grateful that as we express our differences and our agreements, we know that we – each and every one of us – are not able to stand on our own without God’s help.

As time passes one prayer must continue to be said. It is a prayer given to me a week or so ago:

O God have mercy on us, and give us peace.

You know us. You know our fears and doubts.

You know the things we hope will happen and

The things we pray will not.

You know how hard it is for us to determine your will.

Let us hear your voice.

Let your thoughts mingle with ours.

We will be quiet now and listen, but in case

We hear nothing, guide us anyway.

And in case you have nothing to say,

Just let us know you are there.

In the name of your Son. Amen.
